Each year, thousands of senior citizens or disabled adults are abused, neglected and exploited in nursing homes, assisted living facilities (ALFs), and other elder care facilities. Many victims are frail and vulnerable and cannot help themselves, depending totally on others to meet their most basic needs. The issue is so widespread that legislatures in all 50 states have passed some form of elder abuse prevention laws.

Elderly/Disabled Adult Abuse in Nursing Homes

Knowing the warning signs of abuse is a first step toward protecting elderly/disabled relatives or friends. Sometimes residents of care facilities may sustain physical injuries, such as bruising, torn skin, and/or broken bones, from outright physical abuse.

Nursing Home Neglect

In other instances, neglect can cause dehydration and malnutrition or infections from untreated bed sores. Neglect in the form of failing to monitor or provide walking assistance can result in falls or wandering. Wandering means that the nursing home or ALF resident managed to leave the facility without anyone noticing his/her absence. If you believe someone is being abused or neglected in a nursing care facility, then there is a chance that the facility has a history of neglecting/abusing its residents. For information on ideas about how to proactively “manage” the care of loved ones confined to nursing homes/ALFs, where reasonably possible under the circumstances to avert a life-endangering situation resulting from negligence and/or abuse, please see our blog posts. As nursing home negligence and abuse attorneys, we believe first and foremost that an ounce of prevention can be worth a pound of cure when it comes to trying to protect the health and safety of our vulnerable senior and disabled citizens.
